The original name of the company was to have Dong-hwan, which started in 1954, South Korea. For 1966, the company started exporting buses to Brunei, the following year its place of export would be Viet Nam. Then step known as Dong-A Motor in 1977, the company would be devoted to other businesses, such as the construction and petroleum refining. Business began with the construction of exclusive jeeps for the US military, then commercial vehicles such as buses, trucks and special vehicles such as mixers and fire, becoming the first producer of vehicles in the country would be built.
The twin dragons
In 1986, the automotive would definitely change of name and would become "SsangYong Motor Company", whose meaning is "twin dragons". This same year launch to the market the first series of trucks called Korando, which is a compact SUV 4WD, known as the first SUV manufactured entirely in Korea, since then has a very good reputation at the time of filing SUVs in the Asian country. At the beginning of the 1990s, SsangYong acquires 100% of the British company "Panther", entering the world of the automobile with extremely expensive and exclusive vehicles, using the model Kallista and turning it into SsangYong Kallista, from that moment this model is highlighted by a good quality/price ratio, which opens the doors to new markets.
SsangYong and Mercedes Benz
In 1992, Mercedes-Benz AG decided to invest in the capital of Ssangyong Motors, establishing a strategic alliance and creating cooperation in technologies, management and distribution with the mentioned company. Through this partnership, Ssangyong Motors begins to develop luxury cars, commercial vehicles lighter and diesel engines. Which allowed him to establish new ways of distribution support to its increasingly sophisticated products, crossing the borders of their country. A year later, the company shipped a production known as SsangYong Musso, who was a pickup truck 4 X 4 SUV, which had a personal style and high performance. For 1994 he inaugurated a plant in Changwon, exclusively for the manufacture of engines.
At the end of the 90s, a new model known as Chairman is introduced into the market of high-end vehicles. SsangYong building a second plant in Changwon, dedicated exclusively to the manufacture of Mercedes Benz engines. Then the crisis hit them, forcing them to join Daewoo until the year 2000.
After the crisis, SsangYong undergoes restructuring, receiving all the support from its creditors and independent, which serves to launch new models, with a better quality, good customer service and a large distribution network. Among the models that appeared on that date were the Rexton (2001), the Rodius (2004), (2005) Kyron and Actyon (2006). At the end of 2004, the Chinese group "Shanghai Automotive Industry Corporation (SAIC)" acquired almost 50% of the shares of SsangYong. SsangYong Motor currently has two plants, one in Changwon, which is dedicated to the manufacture of gearboxes and engines and another located in Pyungtaek, where the nucleus, the center of research and development. The firm produces 210000 vehicles per year and has more than 7,000 employees, offering to the highest bidder more than 50% of its shares, valued at 430 million euros.
