History of Volvo

Volvo, formally call Volvo Personvagnar AB although popularly known as Volvo Cars, is a company manufacturer of automobiles in Sweden. It has its headquarters in Gothenburg. It is one of the most traditional European brands, and its cars have always had a reputation of very safe because of the innovations that has always had in this important field, as the three-point safety belt.

Another strong point of Volvo is the durability of their products; and all at competitive prices. Its name means "I roll" in latin, and has by logo the ancient symbol of steel, which also represented the God Mars.

Beginning of Volvo

This company was founded in 1927 by Assar Gabrielsson and Gustaf Larson, Executive and technical directors respectively. In principle was subsidiary of the company of bearings SKF (Svenska Kullagerfabriken), but in 1935 it sold the majority of shares, when Volvo went listed on stock exchange.

The first Volvo model began to be designed in 1925, and the first unit was made on April 14, 1927. It received the name of Volvo ?V4 Jakob, had 4-cylinder and its bodywork was built on wood of beech and ash coated sheet metal. Such succeeded only in six months was covered the total production for the model. They closed the 20's with some difficulties, and the manufacturer Charles Nash came close to buying the Swedish firm, although in the end stayed in Scandinavian lands.

In the 1930s a group of Swedish engineers who had worked in the United States.UU. they contributed their expertise for the technological advancement of the brand. The PV36, of bold, modern lines with an independent at each wheel suspensions, was launched in 1935. In the 1940s, with the scarcity of oil; Volvo created a gas-producing unit. After the second world war they lacking the rubber and metal, but the company overcame these difficulties and went forward. In this decade, it highlights the popular PV800, often used as a taxi.

Growth of Volvo

In 1955 it began to export to the United States. A year later was hired for the first time a head of design: Jan Wilsgaard. Volvo revolutionized the industry in 1959, introducing the 3-point belt, which until today continues to save many lives. They won a first prize for the safety in their cars in 1962.

After reaching the 20,000 workers, they opened two new plants in Sweden and Belgium. They were launched in the 1960s 140, 240 and 245, called 'mother of all Volvo trucks'. After winning more awards in the 1970s, celebrate the 50th anniversary and try a fusion between Saab-Scania and Volvo itself (unsuccessfully) 1980s continued with the growth of the brand.

Volvo in recent times

So we got to 1992 with the Volvo 850, the most ambitious project until then. This car - manufactured as a saloon and variant - was considered beautiful and of high quality by public and critics. It also highlighted the S80, considered the world's safest car. In 1999, Volvo was acquired by the Ford group.

In this way Volvo Group was specifically devoted to producing vehicles such as trucks and tractors. However, in 2009 passed into the hands of china Zhejiang Geely Holding Group, and thus remains to the present day.
