USA: Industry expected shortage of aluminum for automakers

Ford recently introduced a new generation of F-150 pickup . The great appeal of the model, exalted by the automaker itself, was the extensive use of aluminum in its composition, with the goal of reducing the final weight. Since then, the aluminum industry has received several inquiries from leading automotive manufacturers.

But, despite the improvement in terms of structure of the vehicles, the expanded use of aluminum is regarded with concern by those providers. At least in the short term, it is possible there is no metal in sufficient quantity to meet demand.

Representatives from two of these companies, Novelis and Alcoa, told The Detroit News the site of the current landscape. "There is a major automaker that does not even talk to us," said Tom Boney, Novelis. The reason for this interest, according to Boney, was the impact of the launch of the new F-150.

As for Alcoa being built three new factories, two in the United States and Saudi Arabia. "These are investments we are making in order to meet demand, but much of the added capacity is already compromised. Automakers know it will be better to talk to us as soon as possible, "said Kevin Lowery, spokesman for Alcoa.
