Alfa Romeo 156: The Much-Awaited Information

Alfa Romeo, the Italian automaker launched a compact model of the executive class, the 156 model in 1997 and was produced till 2007. This car was introduced as a replacement for the 155 model from the company on the Frankfurt Motor Show in 1997 and was considered as the best-looking car during its reign.

The Assembly

This model was assembled at the Fiat Group factory located in Pomigliano d’Arco in Italy since 1997. In 2002, the production was started in the General Motors facility, Rayong, Thailand, where it was manufactured especially for the markets of Asia Pacific region. This model gained a huge success with a production of 680000 units within the 1997-2005 periods.

Configurations and Upgrades

This model was produced with 7 engine configurations in both estate and saloon Sportwagon body styles along with 2 facelifts in 2002 and 2003 respectively. Catherine Zeta-Jones, a Hollywood actress assisted the campaign for advertising the Sportwagon model.

The Saloon model was replaced by the Q4 Crosswagon model equipped with a 4-wheel drive in Europe in the year 2005 and was produced until 2007. The 159 along with the Brera replaced the 156 model and the GTV model by Alfa Romeo together with the new spider, its convertible sister.

Engine Variants

The engine range consisted of several petrol and diesel variants, out of which the petrol engine series is a 16-valve engine series, provided with Twin spark and VVT (variable valve timing) technologies. The diesel engine variants were produced with the common rail turbo technology. Petrol engines were available with 1.6L, 1.8L and 2.0L capacities producing 120PS, 144PS and 155PS power respectively. The diesel engines include an 8-valve 1.9L straight-4 and 10-valve 2.4L straight-5 engines producing 1005PS and 136PS power respectively. Another engine produced for this series was a 24-valve 2.5L V6 engine with 190PS power rating.

Features of the Model

The initial models of this range contained different packs including a sport pack, including a Momo leather interior, Recaro seats or a Blitz clothing. Along with this, leather gear knob, steering wheel, lowered suspension and the 16-inch wheels were also provided. Another pack was the Lusso pack having a mahogany gear knob & steering wheel from Momo. A special winter pack with heated seats, fog lights and headlight washers was available for the Nordic countries.
