Audi A3: How To Tune?
The Initial Audi A3
The German automaker Audi came out with its small family car Audi A3 in 1996. The first two generations of the Audi A3 were based on the Volkswagen Group A platform. This same platform has been used in other models as well like the Audi TT, Volkswagen Golf, Volkswagen Caddy, Volkswagen Touran, and also SEAT Leon, SEAT Toledo and Skoda Octavia. The Volkswagen Group MQB platform is used in the third-generation A3.
January 2007 saw the non-turbo 2.0 FSI being replaced by the new turbocharged 1.8 TFSI engine rated 160 PS (118kW; 158 hp) with a front wheel drive.
Audi ' e-model' and technologically advanced other models
Towards the end of 2007, the 1.6L FSI engine was replaced by Audi with two new variants. The first variant had a new 125 PS (92 kW; 123 hp) 1.4 L TFSI engine. The second variant was the new 'e-model', Audi's equivalent of the Volkswagens Blue Motion. The new 'e-model' had a 1.9 L TDI engine and was a more ecological car which had CO2 emission levels below 120g/km.
June 2009 saw the Audi announcing the release of two more models of A3 for the Europe market. The first had Audi's start/stop and energy recovery system. It produced 105 PS (77kW; 104 hp) and achieved approximately 4.1L/ 100 km i.e., 69 kW mpg-imps and 89 hp. The second model produced 90 PS (66 kW; 89 hp). It got 4.5 L/ 100km which is 63 mpg-imp with 52 mpg-US. They finally went on sale in the month of June 2009.
Changes in Audi engine designs implemented
Initially Audi had the same 1.2 TFSI engine as found in Volkswagen's Polo and Golf models. In August 2009, Audi announced its replacement with a 1.6 L eight-valve petrol engine. The engine was rated at 105 PS (77 kW; 104 hp) and 175 N m (129 lb ft.), emitting just 127g/km of CO2. News till April 2010 says that Audi is yet to release the official specifications or prices for the 1.2 TSI model. The reason was that the 1.6 model had already been made a special clearance model for clearing of the stock.
The A3 2.0 TDI clean diesel is a modified version of Audi’s A3 2.0 TDI. It was focused more for the North American market. It was unveiled at the 2009 North American International Auto Show. The features included FWD vehicle with S-tronic transmission with Hill-hold assist, Sirius satellite radio, leather seats along with leather steering wheels, auxiliary audio input, dual-zone climate control and 17 inches (432 mm) alloy wheels. It began its sale in the first quarter of 2010 as a 2010 model year vehicle. This model was the second Audi TDI vehicle after the Audi Q7 TDI to be sold in the North America market.
The line-up was further expanded in March 2011. A more powerful 2.0 TDI with 170 PS (125 kW; 168 hp) was introduced. The Audi 2.0 L I4 TDI introduced in 2012 produces 140 hp or 104kW and 236 lb ft or 320 N m of torque. It is said to go from 0 to 60 mph 9 0 to 97 km/h) in 8.9 seconds.
