The German automaker BMW released X6 as mid-size luxury crossover for sale in 2nd quarter of 2008 for the 2009 model year. The X6 has been projected as the Sports Activity Coupe. The X6 shares its platform with the X5. It is manufactured in BMW’s North American plant in Greer, South Carolina along with the X5.The BMS concept X6 Active Hybrid version has also been announced. In April 2009, the sporty X6 M version was announced. It has a 547 hp (408kW) 4.4 L turbocharged V8 engine.

Both had BMW’s 3.0 L turbo diesel engine producing 235 PS (173 kW) in the xDrive30d and 286 PS (210 kW) in the xDrive35d version. The second power unit formed the base for the BMW diesel variant which was launched in late 2008 across 50 states.

The year 2010 saw the replacement of the 35d variant with the 40d. In 2012, a high performing M50d was added, which however had a 3.0 L engine.
