Mazda RX-8: The Horsepower Controversy
Mazda RX-8 is a sports car manufactured by Mazda. It appeared for the first time in the year 2001 at the North American International Auto Show. It is very much similar to that of its predecessors in the RX range, and is powered by a Wankel engine. The company started selling RX-8 in the year 2004 in North America as 2004 model year.
The company announced on Aug 23rd 2011 that the RX-8 will get discontinued from production as a 2011 model. RX-8 was removed from the European markets in the year 2010 after the car failed to meet the emission standards. Without enough sales in the European market with the rise of Yen prices, the company is not interested to continue the sales of RX-8 overseas.
By the year 2006, RX-8 had won 37 international motoring awards, which include 2003 Japanese Car of the Year, 2003 International Engine of the Year, 2004 Singapore Car of the Year, 2003 Australia's Wheels magazine's Car of the Year, U.S. Best Sports Car for the year 2004, and many UK best car awards.
The car was nominated in the Ten Best list for the year 2004, 2005, and 2006 from the Car and Driver magazine. It also got the 1st place in the "Four of a Kind" comparison test held by Car and Driver. In the year 2010, RX-8 stood third out of seven on the Car and Driver's list for the best handling car in America.
