Opel Astra: Best Car For Young Adults

Introduction of the Opel Astra in the market

The Opel Astra has been in the market since 1991. It was introduced by the German car manufacturer Opel. The Opel Astra (Lat: Stars) is hailed as a small family car in the C-segment in Europe.

It is branded in different names in different countries like the Vauxhali Astra in UK and Buick Excelle XT in China. In Australia and New Zealand because of the rising exchange rates which made the car price competitive in the market, The Holden Astra was discontinued. It was replaced by the Holden Cruze. In 2012 it came to Australia as Opel. But within a year Opel withdrew from the market.

Opel’s availability in other countries

The Opel Astra is currently manufactured in many countries like Germany, UK, Russia, Poland, and China and is also assembled from complete knock down or CKD kits in other countries.

The Opel Astra was introduced in the New Zealand in 1995 by the name of Holden. This name was extended during its introduction to the Australia market in 1996. All the cars were imported from Belgium even though the initial batch was from UK. The name ’Holden Astra’ was initially used for the Nissan Pulsar models from 1984-1989.

Due to low import tariffs, the Opel Astra’s first generation of cars was imported to Brazil in December of 1994 as Chevrolet Astra. The Chevrolet in Brazil sent the 2.0 L, 115 bhp engine cars to Belgium. From Belgium the finished products were sent to Brazil. The Brazilian government changed the import tariffs from 20%-70%. This made the car extremely expensive and consequently forced Opel to withdraw from the market. For the Brazil market the locally built Kadett was upgraded. Later on the second generation of cars of Opel Astra started being manufactured in Brazil.
