The history of Hyundai is marked by ups and downs, crisis, restructuring and great recoveries. It all began in 1947 when Ju-Yung founded a repair of automobiles and machinery company, business which was successful by the situation of post-war living the Korean nation then. As the Government was interested in reviving the industry, called Hyundai as a collaborator in this work of reconstruction.

The conglomerate added new production sectors and with the support of the Government Hyundai could expand their reach by opening factories and making concessions out of the country. One of these sectors was the manufacture of cars, with the creation in 1967 by Hyundai Motor Company. His first own creation (formerly was in charge of distributing Ford cars) was the Hyundai Cortina and later the Hyundai Pony, vehicle that opened their doors to the Korean and foreign market.

Even though the Hyundai Excel was elected "Best product 10" by the magazine Fortune in United States, in 1988 Hyundai recorded losses for the first time in its history.

The brutal financial crisis that experienced Korea in 1997 put in check for several companies. Hyundai was also one of them, representing a high risk since she concentrated 20% of gross domestic product. Their bankruptcy would have been fatal to Korea. In 2000, Hyundai had a gigantic debt that forced to dispose of some of their signatures. A year later, its founder died.

To save the company, they decided to give everything to a vehicle. The reputation of Hyundai had dwindled and it was thought that the cars were of poor quality. The product was the Hyundai Coupe, the first sports low-priced that became coach of the year and the most sold in the majority of countries.
