Sales Down paralyze production Viper

The Chrysler Group said it temporarily paralyze the Conner Avenue assembly plant in Detroit (Michigan, USA), which produces the SRT Viper sports.

Although the automaker has not confirmed the true reason for the decision, it was probably caused by lower sales in the model.

"The Chrysler Group confirms that its Conner Avenue Assembly plant will be paralyzed, beginning the week of April 14. Production will resume the week of June 23. Ninety-one employees will be laid off during this time," the spokesman said Jodi Tinson told The Detroit News, in a statement sent via e-mail.

Although Ralph Gille, head of SRT, having said in November last year that there was no reason to worry about the success of the Viper, it seems that things are more complicated. Chrysler sold 591 Vipers in 2013, 91 in the first two months of the year. In addition, the SUB 756 Vipers got not sold on March 1, which represents a stock of 412 days.

Still, Chrysler is changing its recent decision and said that the Viper has never been a vehicle of mass production, since less than 29 000 vehicles were built in the last 20 years.

"The ability to increase and decrease production at Conner Avenue Assembly allows the company to continue to meet our customers' desire to keep these special exclusive cars," said spokeswoman Dianna Gutierrez Chrysler, adding that customers demand and suppliers for the SRT Viper continues to expected levels.
