Audi R8: Perfect Driving Experience
Design and Form of Audi R8
In 2006, Audi AG, the German car maker introduced the Audi R8 (Typ 42) in the market. It is a mid-engine, two-seater sports car with Audi’s trademark Quattro permanent all-wheel drive system.
The concept, design, development and manufacturing were handled by Quattro GmbH, Audi AG’s high performing subsidiary company. It is based on the Lamborghini Gallardo platform. The construction of the R8 is based on the Audi Space Frame. Based on the space frame principles, it uses an aluminium monocoque. Audi R8 is churned out of the newly renovated factory at Audi’s ‘aluminium site’ at Neckarsulm, Germany, by Quattro GmbH.
R8 Development Process
The Audi Le Mans Quattro concept car was designed by Frank Lamberty and Julian Hoenig. The Audi R9 new road car which was launched in 2007 was based on this concept. This announcement was made by Audi in 2005 when it said that the name of its successful Audi R8 race car would be used for the road car in 2007, Audi R8. This new car appeared in the International Geneva Motor Show and also in Frankfurt International Motor Show in 2003.
The R8 development program took off in 2004. Lamberty’s design got approved for production. In January 2006, the production body prototypes began field testing. On 30 September 2006, at the Paris Auto Show the Audi R8 car was officially launched. There was an initial confusion with the name. It shares its name with the R8 Le Mans Prototype (LMP). 6 times time winner of the 24 Hours of Le Mans, Jacky Ickx says that the R8 "the best handling road car today".
