Evolvement of the Honda Civic
Honda came out with a line subcompact and subsequently compact range of cars- the Honda Civic. Honda expanded its model line up soon after. It was sold in the North America’s till 1990s along with the Honda Accord and Honda Prelude. The Civic has evolved over the years having gone through several generational changes. It has become more upmarket and larger and can be currently positioned between a Fit and Accord.
Honda Civic was first introduced in July 1972 as a two-door model. By September 1972, Honda came out with a three-door hatchback. The hatch back had a transverse engine mounting of 1169 cc engine. Despite its small dimensions it had a front wheel drive like the British Mini and with good interior space.
Honda ups the interiors of the Civic
The initial models of the Honda Civic had a basic AM radio, heater, foam-cushioned plastic trim, two-speed wipers, and a painted steel rim with a chromed wheel nut cap. Slowly and over the years, it graduated to a more upscale look and feel. It now had options like air conditioning, power locks, power windows, leather upholstery, satellite-linked navigation and a six-speed manual transmission. The initial models had a reputation of being fuel-efficient, reliable and environment friendly cars. The later models were perceived more for sportiness and performance, what with the Civic Type-R, Civic VTi, Civic GTi and Civic SiR.
Civics’ entry into International Markets
Honda rebadged its model for entry into various international markets. The Honda Ballade became the British Leyland-produced Triumph Acclaim in Britain and Honda Domani /Acura EL. The Civic also served as a base for many CR-X sports compact. The sports compact models are CR-X del Sol targa convertible, The Honda Concerto, first generation Honda Prelude, the Honda Civic Shuttle ( Later the Honda Orthia), and of course the CRV compact SUV. From years 1985- 2006 the Civic was dedicated to Japanese dealership Honda Primo. Here the Civic variants were sold at Honda Clio and Honda Verno locations.
Honda Civic sales plummets
2006 reported total sales of 16.5 million of Honda Civic, worldwide till that year, with 7.3 million in the US. By 2012, the Honda Civic had taken the position of the top-selling car in Canada for 14 years. June 2008, saw high gas prices and a weak economy in the United States. This same month the Civic supplanted the Ford F-Series and became the top-selling vehicle in US for that particular month.
Japan loses out on The Civic
August 2010 saw the end of production of non-hybrid Civic for domestic markets in Japan. By December 2010, the production of the Civic hybrid for home market ended. The Japan market recently has seen a shift in preference by customers to minivans and compact cars like the Honda Fit, which was launched in October.
The production of Civic and Civic hybrid for export markets continues.
