Reality behind the Launch of Hyundai Equus
In the year 1999, Hyundai and Mitsubhishi collaborated and launched their first long luxury sedan, claiming that they have introduced large sedan cars in Korea to compete against those times leading sedans that were BMW 7 Series & Mercedes Benz S-class, but the reality of the matter is that their main intention is to give strong competition to SsangYong Chairman, their rivals in Korea since except one car that was imported to New York through International Auto Show, no sedans were ever imported to New York. However, the car was a big hit in Korean markets. In USA, the car was launched by the name Hyundai LZ450 to attract consumers, but its fails as USA consumers already have options like Mercedes and BMW.
Changes in Engine over the Period
Originally Equus was designed with two types of engine, 4.5 8A80 Omega V8 engine & 3.5 Sigma V6, but company was not satisfied with their performance and in the next few months they immediately added a new engine type that is 3.0 Sigma V6 engine. Equus included two models, sedan with 3.0, 3.5 & 4.5 engines and its limousine that includes 3.5 as well as 4.5 engines. Considering the goodwill of both companies, the manufacturers decided to launch the Equus limousine car in Japan by the name Mitsubhishi Dignity and the sedan version by the name Mitsubhishi Proudia, these cars have done significant business as the total number of sold cars were more than two thousands.
Hyundai had to deal with engine issues with Hundai Equus, particularly with omega V8 engine sedans; the engine was designed by Mitsubhishi and they have named it GDA, which stands for Gasoline Direct Injection. However, the engine was efficient that does not include lead, but its unpopularity in Korea became the reason for its failure. Since people don't know how to use it, company had to face list of complaints and considering that Hyundai have to take significant decision and decides to replace this engine with Multi Point Injection (PMI), by this decision they solved the issue once and for all.
