Skoda Felicia: Opt For a Smooth Ride
During the mid 1990s, the Czech automobile Company Skoda came up with their super mini car; the Skoda Felicia. The car hit the market in 1994 and remained present till 2001.
Some Interesting Facts
Among some interesting facts about the vehicle, most prominent are the followings.
- It was the final model to come out from Czech Skoda platform.
- After takeover of Skoda by the German Volkswagen the model continued to stay in production.
- Though the Skoda Felicia was basically a remodeling and renovation of the Favorit model it had some inherent variations.
- Its appearance gave it a fresh as well as contemporary flavor.
- While the front end was completely redesigned the buyers had greater options in respect of engine choices.
Brief Life Span
Overall life of Felicia was brief compared to some other leading models in the market. The model that was borne in Prague in the month of October 1994 had the following evolutions.
- Production started in 1994 with hatchback.
- It continued in 1995 with the appearance of Combi.
- The pickup saw daylight in 1995.
- The model breathed its last in June 2001.
Reuse of Name
Another interesting fact about the super mini car is that its name was not unique as it was basically a resurrection of the name given to some older model by Skoda during the 1960s. Felicia at that point of time referred to a whole range of 2-seater sports cars.
Features of engines used in Skoda Felicia are as follows.
- Internal combustion engines are all four cylindered.
- They are all fuel injected and at the same time also water cooled.
- Engines are front mounted.
- In addition; the engines are also transversely oriented.
- Overhead value continued to 1.3 liters.
- Engines running on petrol ran on single point fuel injection system till 1997.
- After 1997 the Company migrated to the multi-point fuel injection engines marketed by Siemens.
Engine Power Output
A significant improvement in the engine was the 2-rated 40kw and also 50kw in power supply. Volkswagen group became the source for 55kw and 1.6 liter engine that ran on petrol as fuel. They also developed 47kw and 1.9 liter diesel engine. However, it was the 1.6 liter petrol car that acted as inspiration for development of Skoda Felicia kit car. Incidentally, this car was also used during the F2 class world rally championships.
Skoda however developed and designed its indigenous 75kw as well as 1.6 aluminum OHC engines. Though they figured in some races, after the takeover, Volkswagen group decided to rely on their older 55kw and 1.6 MPI engines.
Transmission in Felicia was dependent on the 5-speed albeit manual gearbox. The design of the gearbox was that of transaxle. It also had the differential as well as final driving units.
Skoda Felicia was driven on its front wheel.
