The North American Version
The General Motors and Suzuki produced a model named CAMI in a joint venture, which was renamed to Vitara after 199 in North America. This model was produced to follow up two popular models Samurai and SJ413, while it was designed with an aim to slot it above the Samurai model. Grand Escudo, its bigger version is also available with the name Grand Vitara XL-7 in some other markets. Before the adoption of the Euro, escudo was Portugal’s monetary unit, from where the name of this car is derived.
Various badges were available with the Sidekick like the Pontiac Sunrunner, Asuna Sunrunner, Chevrolet Tracker or the GMC Tracker in the Canada and the Geo Tracker, renamed after 1998 to the Chevrolet Tracker, in the US. In Spain, this model was sold with the Santana 300 & 350 badges and available with the Mazda badge in the Japanese market.
