In the year between 1980 and 1982 the name “Camry” was attached to the nameplate of the 4-door Sedan thus naming it “Toyota Celica Camry”.

“Camry” name was the phonetic transcription of the Anglicized Japanese word “Kamuri” which means ‘crown”. The word thus signifies Toyota’s tradition of using the name Crown in all its primary models beginning with Toyota Crown and still continuing the tradition with Toyota Corona and Corolla where the latter word means “crown’ and “small crown” respectively.
